We design every custom abutment in 3Shape using the implant's library file, your tissue depth measurements, and the planned restoration. The result is an emergence profile that supports healthy peri-implant tissue and a crown margin at exactly the right depth.
Titanium abutments are the workhorse for posterior and angled cases. Zirconia abutments eliminate metal show-through for anterior esthetic situations where tissue is thin or translucent.

When should I go custom instead of using a stock abutment?
Whenever the emergence profile matters. A custom abutment is shaped to the patient’s actual tissue and to the angle the implant actually went in, so the restoration emerges the way a natural tooth would and the margin sits where you want it relative to the gingiva. Stock components are fine when everything is ideal — custom is what you want when it isn’t.
Titanium or zirconia?
Titanium for strength and for posterior sites. Zirconia where the tissue is thin or the site is anterior and you don’t want grey showing through — usually as zirconia bonded to a titanium base, which keeps a metal-to-implant connection while giving you the esthetics above the tissue.
Do you supply the Ti-base and screw?
We can supply both, or you can send your own components — either works for us. Pricing differs depending on which way you go, so note it on the Rx and we’ll quote the case accordingly.
What do you need from me to make one?
The implant system and which component was placed, plus a scan body in your digital scan or an impression coping in a conventional impression. Anything that captures the surrounding tissue helps — the emergence profile is only as good as the information we have about the site it has to come through.
Can I send a digital scan instead of an impression?
Yes. Capture a scan body in the scan so we can locate the implant, and tell us the system and the component that was placed. If your scanner supports it, add GIE as a connected lab and send straight from your portal — see connect your scanner. Otherwise upload STL or PLY files through send your scan files. Conventional impressions with an impression coping work just as well.
